Veeam Community Forums Digest February 18 - February 24, 2019

THE WORD FROM GOSTEV
Thanks to everyone who took time to play with the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 (VBO365) version 3.0 beta code! We're getting some very good feedback on this release, especially on its performance improvements. However, one feature that appears to be challenging to test is multi-factor authentication (MFA) support. While on the VBO365 side enabling MFA is pretty straightforward, setting up an Office 365 account for MFA seems to be quite a challenge. Here's the blog post that provides the detailed step by step guide with lots of PowerShell involved, and I already saw a draft of the corresponding document from Veeam that explains how to do this using Microsoft Azure Active Directory and Microsoft Office 365 management interfaces in 17 pages worth of screenshots! I assume this draft will be posted on the VBO365 forums soon, once validated.

Last week we have posted a big blog on our next generation subscription licensing that was introduced with Update 4. In this blog, we tried to address all most frequently asked questions and comments about this new licensing model, so please review it when you get a chance > Veeam Instance Licensing changes everything, except price!

Here's a short video from some of the smartest folks at Veeam on one of my favorite topics: tape. I like it because it is unbiased and just explains things the way they are, leaving you to make the choice. And I learnt something new from it too – while I personally always focus on technical benefits of tape (such as true air-gap), apparently there are business benefits for certain companies around regulatory compliance. The video is less than 5 minutes long, so I highly recommend you watch it (and perhaps forward to your CIO as well) > Tape is (not) dead

As we're working on the next major Veeam Backup & Replication release, for your planning purposes I wanted to consolidate and remind of all the changes to system requirements which have been discussed before in separate topics and polls. With this release, we're doing some big "clean up" of legacy platforms. These changes will allow us to update 3rd party components to the latest versions, and prevent spreading our QC resources too thin, focusing them where it matters the most. Based on big data, the impact of these changes on our customer base should be minimal. However, don't worry if you're still using some of those platforms! We're planning to support 9.5 Update 4 for at least 3 years, so you will be able to just stay on the current product version. Also, you will see that in many cases, we left the latest updates for most major releases still supported:

• Veeam Backup & Replication components will no longer support being installed on Windows Server 2008 SP2, Windows 8.0 and Windows 10 1507/1511. However, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 (1607 or later) will continue to be supported. Also, Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 continues to be supported as before.

• Application-aware processing and guest file system indexing will no longer support Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP virtual machines. However, crash-consistent backup of such VMs will of course still be supported - as generally speaking, we don't care what's inside those images we're backing up (and whether there is any OS at all).

• VMware vSphere 5.0 and 5.1 will no longer be supported. However, vSphere 5.5 will continue to be supported. Importantly, the new VeeamCDP functionality specifically will require vSphere 6.5 or later due to its platform dependencies.

VEEAM CLOUD & SERVICE PROVIDER CORNER
To follow up on our recent release of Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 v3 Beta (VBO): if you want to try out the Modern Authentication Support feature and have some questions on how to set this up, feel free to contact your System Engineer for assistance. Additionally, if you have any questions or feedback on the current beta, please do let us know via forums.

If you are an existing VBO user and plan to integrate this solution to your portal or want to know how to automate some tasks via APIs, here is good walk-through blog series by Niels Engelen, our Global Technologist from the Product Strategy team: Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 RESTful APIs (a good read!)

Speaking about automation and scripting, as you all know Veeam Cloud Connect usage reports need to be submitted every month for rental keys and we do have a predefined report for that! However, if you want to use this information in your aggregation system further, then take a look at this script sample, which allows you export usage data to a CSV file, parse it and import it to the different chargeback and billing systems. Thanks, Luca Dell'Oca, our Principal Cloud Architect, for creating this script!

By the way, a quick heads up to all our VCSPs using Cloud Connect daily report with a custom schedule (set in the registry). After upgrading to Update 4, you could have started experiencing issues with report generation time. This issue has been confirmed, and the hotfix is underway. To be notified on the hotfix availability, please subscribe to this thread in the VCSP forums.

Update 4 has brought lots of improvements and new features for Cloud Connect. One of the features I would like to close this digest out is Tape as a Service functionality. Tenant to Tape capability gives you another way to offer an air-gapped solution to protect customer's data better. To review how you can set this up; please read this blog post by Anthony Spiteri, our Global Technologist in the Product Strategy team.

Re: VBREP doesn't work with new update   [BY: Lucas HELLMANN • LIKED: 2 times]
Hello,

You can just use Get-VBRJob and it should display your Agent backup Job just fine.
Like this :

CODE: Select all

asnp VeeamPSSnapin $Job = Get-VBRJob | ? {$_.TypetoString -eq "Windows Agent Backup"} $Job.Name
And as it is noted here : https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... l?ver=95u4 :
Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows cmdlets will not work for jobs that were created using Veeam Agent management functionality. The ability to manage Veeam Agent management jobs will be provided in future versions of Veeam PowerShell.
You can't yet manage Agent Backup Job created via the B&R interfaces with the VBREP commands. It will only work with the Agent Backup Job created by the client server. if my understanding is correct.

Cheers,
Lucas

9.5 Update 4 The worst Update Ever!!!!   [VIEWS: 484 • REPLIES: 15]
On Friday of the last week went to update to 9.5 Update 4 because in the forum and a call to Veeam support everyone said it was ok to do. Well, it's not, after 30 hours of work all Day and Night on Friday and several hours on Sat and Sun and also having to rebuild a VM for the main Veeam Server. After completely rebuilding the main Veeam backup server and getting it back online and hearing from several Veeam people on how bad this update is I am here to say DON'T update to 9.5 Update 4 unless to have a lot of time to spend. Using Veeam for about 5 years this is the worst Experience I have ever had with a Veeam Update. For a Company who prides itself on getting this right, this one is a bust and more test should have been done. If your support department is having a lot of problems with an update be honest with your users and don't say in forums and in your Support Dept that everything is OK. Come on Veeam you are better than this. Support Number 03418521 This was a joke and a lot of work this weekend. :( more
Migration of Veeam server   [VIEWS: 213 • REPLIES: 13]
Hi there,
We are currently having a Veeam server with a LTO 6 autoloader attached to it as SAS and disk library to save restore points on it.
Veeam is connected to our production servers via 2 ethernet cabled which is providing 1 GB of bandwidth, we are having 10 ESXI servers , with around 100 VM's and around 5 Agent based physical servers which Veeam is taking care of them but is really slow.

Veeam storage volume madness   [VIEWS: 190 • REPLIES: 14]
We recently did a test of Veeam in our environment. I am familiar with Veeam but not so much with storage snapshots. After the test, with no scheduled backups setup, we ended up with 250+ new volumes named, e.g., VEEAM-ExportLUNSnap-28E485338B414DAD00015F22. This was on a Pure storage array. I know I will most likely have to delete them one by one but was curious whether anyone else had seen similar issues and/or knows of a way I can get Veeam to manage/delete them. Whatever it was apparently was running every hour for a week or more on 3 actual volumes. more
Domain Admin account and Veeam   [VIEWS: 161 • REPLIES: 14]
Hello,
Currently, we use a domain admin service account for manage my Veeam B&R solution (jobs, vcenter integration, etc)---> bad.
In a context of PCI-DSS compliance, we must limited the usage of domain admin account. more
ReFS on Hardware or Software RAID?   [VIEWS: 148 • REPLIES: 10]
This is more of a ReFS specific question but looking at a 200TB Veeam repository on a Dell R740xd server and am wondering what the best practice is regarding RAID controllers. Do RAID controllers need to be certified for ReFS or will any RAID card do?
