THE WORD FROM GOSTEV

I've something really cool to share this week! I'm hard to impress but this completely blew my mind – check out this video of Alexa bot for Veeam Backup & Replication. And what's even more impressive is that this bot was created by one of our system engineers, Thomas Sandner - who openly admitted having no programming skills whatsoever, and yet he was able to build this in a few days using our RESTful API (part of Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager). It's really hard to find a better demonstration of the importance of APIs, so enhancing those remains my top priority.

By the way, if you don't feel like talking to your backup server, you may want to check out this Veeam plug-in for PoshBot instead (which is a Slack bot written in PowerShell). Looks pretty neat and allows to get comprehensive info very fast - sorry Alexa, but human voice is one of the slowest communication systems out there. And another benefit here is the use of Veeam PowerShell SDK, which is available in all product editions.

Less than 2 months after that embarrassing security bug of showing the actual password instead of the password hint, macOS High Sierra was found to have even bigger one – arguably the biggest security issue in the history of operating systems. Essentially, anyone can login as root with empty password by simply clicking the login button several times! It's almost like you're persuading the machine to accept one, and finally she agrees. And according to another report I saw on Twitter, disabling root account does not help as apparently this hack re-enables one. Wow! But on a positive side, the initial patch was released by Apple a mere 18 hours after this bug was reported.

For those planning to attend VeeamON 2018 in Chicago, please be aware that the registration is now open and there's a Super Early Bird (I think we just invented this term) registration rate available through the end of this holiday season.

You know I fly on business a lot – and I love to fly, but I hate airports and prefer trains for routes under 5 hours (which actually gets me to quite a few destinations from Baar). I'm cool with trains because I used nothing but those in my childhood, with routes of 2-3 nights being quite common. So coming back from my last trip to our R&D office in Prague, I decided to take an overnight train to Zurich for a change. And I really liked it – downtown to downtown route, no usual airport drill that makes me sick, convenient to work in, and much less stress overall (so long as you are able to sleep in a transport). But the best part is that it brings a totally different, fresh experience into otherwise boring routine, plus you get to see a lot more "life" comparing to flying – something we otherwise don't have much time for in our busy lives! So this trip has inspired me to look for "cruises" across Europe for my entire family, and it seems that OBB is particularly big on long-haul trains down here, for example Vienna to Rome via Venice sounds pretty scenic ;)
