THE WORD FROM GOSTEV

For those of you using SMB network share on NetGear ReadyNAS as a backup storage for Veeam Agent for Windows, please note that updating firmware to the latest version 6.9.0 will make your backups start failing. This is caused by the fact that NetGear implemented advanced file system control (FSCTL_DUPLICATE_EXTENTS_TO_FILE), which presence tells our data mover than the storage supports fast cloning. However, the actual fast cloning will fail because another control we require is not implemented (FSCTL_SET_INTEGRITY_INFORMATION). As a result, the job will fail with "Agent failed to process method {ReFs.SetFileIntegrity}" error. If you run into this issue, please open a support case with us to get the hot fix.

Another commonly reported issue with Veeam Agent for Windows these days is caused by a change in Windows 10 version 1709. Please note that we don't officially support the latest Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 yet – as I noted in my previous digest, their support will be included in the upcoming update only. Nevertheless, this particular issue when backups start failing with "Cannot find shadow copy of volume" error after upgrading to version 1709 has been researched, and there are a few solutions available.

Dropping ransomware via email attachments suddently became "old and boring" technique. The "new and shiny" (and admittedly very clever) way to distribute ransomware is through poisoned Google Search results. These bad guys really took time to prepare the attack, and obviously it paid off with high "conversion rates" due to how targeted the attack was. I have to give it to them, it's really quite brilliant – and while it's obvious now, I've never realized before that my careless clicking through Google search results can tell someone out there quite sensitive information about me via this sort of smart SEO tricks.

If you have not heard the AlphaGo Zero story yet, you really want to check it out. It's quite terrifying to know that already today, machine learning is capable of surpassing thousands of years of human knowledge in just 3 days - all on its own! We used to think of machine learning as a process that requires massive amount of data, assuming we humans are in control because it will be up to us to provide the data and "teach" the AI to work with it. Well guess what, in this particular case the machine did not need anything except basic rules of the game – it both generated the data and learnt from it all by itself. Stephen Hawking might have been quite spot on with his recent statements on the danger of AI...

VEEAM CLOUD & SERVICE PROVIDER CORNER

Hello Veeam Cloud & Service Provider partners!

It's been awhile, since I've shared some news regarding our activities around VCSP events and our product updates, so let me fix it!

This week our Cloud team will be present at IT Nation 2017, a ConnectWise conference, where we plan to have a demo booth, so don't hesitate to come by and say hi. Moreover, I'm planning to be there as well to answer all your tricky questions regarding our plug-ins for LabTech. Speaking of which, our QA team has tested them against the upcoming release of ConnectWise Automate 12 (next version of LabTech), and unfortunately there are a couple of issues for each plug-in that affect licensing and data displayed on some tabs. I will keep you posted on our progress addressing these issues (or if we find some workarounds).

Lastly, some good news about Veeam Availability Console (VAC): our QA team is expecting the RTM build to be signed off this week, so answering the most frequently asked question on the forums of when VAC will be generally available - we're talking days now!

BEST POST OF THE WEEK

Re: REFS 4k horror story   [BY: JaySt • LIKED: 4 times]

Is it perhaps possible for Veeam to create a KB article with the current status and best practices regarding the use of ReFS/Registry settings etc etc.
It's better than sending everyone off to a 43-page forum thread right?
