THE WORD FROM GOSTEV

More Veeam releases – our QC has just signed off the RTM build for Veeam Agent for Linux 1.0 Update 1. This is mostly a bug fix release – however it does include a few minor features: file system indexing for 1-Click FLR via Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager, ability to customize recovery media with storage and network drivers from local computer, recovery media SSH server that auto-starts if no input has been received from keyboard in 60 sec, and ExaGrid repository support. As usual, we are now starting the early access program. Unfortunately, we do not have a good way to distribute the RTM build publicly: we can't update our release repository until GA, and we've no "testing" repository at the moment. So, you can only get the update from our support for now (plus, they will be reaching out to those of you with support cases already opened on the issues this update fixes). Please do keep in mind this update does require Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 2 as well, so be sure to grab both from support.

It seems I get to tell you about crazy security issues every other week lately, and they only get worse every time. I actually ran out of adjectives to classify their seriousness and not sure how to keep going? Since "epic" was already the top of my scale, I had to borrow one of our founder's favorite word, humongous, for this one. The vulnerability is seriously fantastic though, because it allows most Intel-based computers to be remotely controlled regardless of how secured the operating system is. And all it takes to break in over the network – wait for this – is to use an empty login string! Finally, to balance the ease of exploiting, this vulnerability cannot be simply patched and requires a MOTHER...board firmware update! OK, you have probably already guessed by now where the hole is > the humongous Intel's Management Engine vulnerability

OK, so we've established that blank credentials are bad. However, what about the other extreme? We live in one, being stuck in the past century as it comes to password best practices. Do you require your users to change their passwords periodically? Use a bunch of inhumane symbols to meet the password complexity? If you answered YES to both questions (come on, I know you did) then you might find this study from NIST very educational > New password guidelines say everything we thought about passwords is wrong

As you may have already noticed from our web site, leading to VeeamON we've started the major rebranding process – and are switching to a more modern corporate look and feel, and even the new logo. It's hard to believe, but the previous one is 11 years old now, and its face lift was well overdue. I personally do like the new look a lot (and also the fact that I'm going to get a bunch of fresh Veeam t-shirts). Anyway, as they say – please excuse our appearance while we're remodeling, and we do apologize for any bugs or issues you may encounter in our web resources and email communications this month.

Oh, and did I mention VeeamON? It actually starts in just 7 days from now, while I'm leaving for NOLA even sooner to deliver the v10 training to our booth staff. If you ask me, the number one reason to attend is specifically v10 – VeeamON will be where we will first announce and demo top v10 features. And let me tell you that v10 will be huge, just as you would expect from our 10th major release – so starting to learn about its capabilities in advance will let your company make more educated decisions for your 2018 IT investments (trust me, I'm not just saying this). Besides, there also will be incredible amount of field knowledge shared that you can use RIGHT NOW for Veeam products versions which are generally available. And if you need even more reasons to go, then we have them (plus an unlisted one, to see me dancing – just remember that what has been seen cannot be unseen). Anyway, it's not too late to join 2500 other attendees of this amazing event, 3rd in Veeam's history!

By the way, I'm very proud that my three VeeamON sessions: "What's New in Veeam Backup & Replication v10", "VMware Backup Best Practices: 2017 Edition", and "Backup Repository Best Practices: 2017 Edition" have taken the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place of most selected in the VeeamON mobile app. This makes it the perfect 3-2-1 rule of VeeamON breakouts! But on a serious note - if you get too sucked in by the Big Easy and can't make them (or any others sessions for that matter), remember that all attendees will be able to replay all breakouts - as long as at least the presenters make them :)

B&R 9.5 to Synology - current best solution   [VIEWS: 290 • REPLIES: 13]

We're looking at getting a Synology RS2416RP+ to store our backups and I'm trying to find out the best way of connecting our Veeam installation to the NAS.
I've read a bunch of articles, some of which say connect directly from Veeam with the NAS as a Linux server and other that suggest connecting the NAS to the Windows server using iSCSI or NFS and then connecting Veeam to that. more

The need for Active Full – REFS   [VIEWS: 195 • REPLIES: 6]

We are running Veeam 9.5 - REFS and it works very well. Although I am excited about the spaceless synthetic full backup, I'm skeptical about the data integrity after eons of block cloning and only transferring delta from VMware. more

Is the RTM version already the production version?   [VIEWS: 192 • REPLIES: 5]

Good night, I saw now that the RTM version of Veam Agent for Windows 2.0 came out, but one question, would RTM be like Release Candidate or is it already the final version that can begin to be used in homologation and production? It's just that I'm not used to the naming of versions of Veeam products. more
