Veeam Community Forums Digest August 14 - August 20, 2017
THE WORD FROM GOSTEV Just a few quick points for this week as I am enjoying my vacation and seeing some amazing things here in Switzerland.
The first is for those attending VMworld US, everything you need to know is here. This includes information on our two sponsored breakouts: one is a deeper dive of Veeam Backup & Replication v10 and the other one with good tips on using the latest vSphere features like vSAN, VVOLs, encrypted VMs and more. And of course the legendary party at Hakkasan – open for everyone with your VMworld badge and photo ID! Unfortunately, I myself am going to miss this VMworld (first in 7 years) due to some technical travel related issues. However, I will for sure come to my favorite city of Barcelona for VMworld Europe - plus there's one more reason for me to go there now, and that is to pay the tribute to victims of terror attack there last week...
The important milestone just in time for VMworld is our QA clearing vSphere 6.5 Update 1 as supported with Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 2. I missed the previous digest to cover this appropriately, but the news still got included via the best post of the week logic, and this resulted in a big wave of requests for confirmation – so here it comes. One good way to receive confirmations for this type of information is by following @VeeamKB on Twitter – the official account of Veeam's customer support. No marketing noise on that Twitter feed, so do watch it closely.
This news made me smile! Something I blogged about here a few months ago has now become the official recommendation from NIST > Choose longer pass phrases, rather than simply a mix characters
Mind blowing fact of the week - the totally unexpected new type of backup media that is able to store data for hundreds of years far more reliably than any known technology (and all of us happen to be the living proof of this statement) > Biohackers Encoded Malware in a Strand of DNA
BEST POST OF THE WEEK Feature Request : Web Console [BY: Craig Dalrymple • LIKED: 6 times]
I'm sure this isn't the 1st, and definitely wont be the last, post requesting a web (html) console but thought it deserves another discussion. At the moment tone option for web based access is via Enterprise Manager. While this is a useful tool, it is geared more around the self-serve restore functions with limited job management. There is also the upcoming Veeam Availability Console (VAC) , which appears to be gear more towards pure management (at this stage anyway, that may change). Sure we have remote console introduce in V9, but that still requires the installation of an application. What I guess people are asking for is the best of all those products in a nice shiny HTML5 console that us nice backup admins can access from any browser/device. Having used the VAC console, this is very much a step in the right direction.
Are there any plans to develop this further to add extra functionality?
Now being needy IT people, once this 'need' has been addressed ..can we add VeeamOne console into the mix, for a truly 'one pane of glass' (should that be one glass of pain??) solution.
I await the inevitable smack down :D
p.s. btw ...k00laidit made me write this

kernel 4.12.5 appeared in Fedora 26 repos,
I updated as usual, but veeamsnap dkms modue was not able to build itself more
I know of many people's historical issues with StoreOnce restore speeds (and other dedupe appliances). We're looking at the HPE StoreOnce 3540, and wondered....Using one VM in multiple Replication / sureReplica jobs [VIEWS: 162 • REPLIES: 8]
1. Has anyone got any real world MB/s restore throughputs that they are achieving out there on Storeonce? Doesn't have to be specifically 3540

Hi,Feature req: embed postgres as default database, not sqlexpr [VIEWS: 154 • REPLIES: 3]
I have two enterprise systems of multiple interrelated VM's that both rely on having a Domain Controller in order to start correctly in a SureReplica job.
It seems to me that I should not replicate one VM in two different Replication jobs, so how do others deal with this situation?

Hello,offsite backup repository [VIEWS: 148 • REPLIES: 3]
it would be great if Veeam in the future would consider the possibility to use in the default install the postgres sql database and not the limited sql express, transparently.
Vmware already, for its most critical components like virtual center server, transitioned to PostgreSQL as the default option, with many benefits in the present and in the future, like:
- predictability of the db software stack used by customers (less support and dev costs)
- optimizations and speed (due to predictability, dev use the same system as customer)
- no limits (sqlexpress limits become a no-problem), almost infinite scalability
- no direct or separate licence costs
- high flexibility (replications, clustering, ha. more
Hi guys,
I'm thinking about an offsite backup repository to use for many tenants as I think cloud connect is not yet the ideal solution/pricing at the moment.
Can I add 1 single remote repository over vpn to several different customers? Let's say 1 single repository, and in there each folder and tenant accounts that only has NTFS permissions to their own folder. more
